Ah, Halloween. Even these (many) years after trick-or-treating, I still remember how cool that night felt. Racing out the door after dinner, meeting your friends on the neighborhood streets that were lit only by streetlights (who DOES that anymore?), and of course, the candy. The frikkin’ candy that would keep you in a perpetual state of pre-diabetic shock for days after.
But what I most recall is that magical energy in the air. You could feel it – literally. Like any spooky thing could really happen. My friends and I saw ghosts and goblins hiding everywhere — and man, was it fun.
As a psychic-medium, I’ve since learned that there’s a very good reason for that magical “feel” of Halloween. All Hallow’s Eve – or “Samhain” – was one of the most important religious times of the year for ancient Celts. Samhain is still celebrated by Wiccans, as it marks the end of summer and the harvest, and is, quite literally, their “new year.”
The spooky angle of Halloween came about because of an ancient belief that this night was when the veil “between the worlds” was at its thinnest. The Celts knew that the spirits of the dead could come back and walk the earth – hence, dressing up in costumes to “scare” them away. That scare factor also accounts for the plethora of walking-dead-blood-spurting-chainsaw-wielding type movies that run on cable all week long.
I’ve since learned to view Halloween as not only fun, but sacred. There’s a certain power to honoring another “turn of the wheel” and the natural rhythms of the earth that were so well known to my ancestors. Consider this time your “new year” and think about what you want to bring about or change in the coming months.
And because the wall separating us from deceased loved ones is not as high on this night, place a photo of someone who’s departed under your pillow. Invite them to join them in your dreams, and know that their presence is very real.
(Just because it is one of THE great dance videos, here’s some Michael Jackson to celebrate. And admit it — you’re gonna be doing some of these moves in your living room. I know I am. Trick or treat!)
The Beach Boys sang about it – and so did a pre-“serious actor” Marky Mark. I’m talking about “good vibrations.” “Vibrations”, as in a higher energy. “Good”, as in, well, good.
Working effectively with any metaphysical practice (like Tarot), or entities (like angels), requires adjusting our energy. That’s because our usual human energetic state just chugs along. We go on autopilot, with our vibration sort of “powered down.”
Not to mention, today’s environment pounds the crap out of our energy, between the food, toxins and endless electronic distraction we’re subject to. In that state, it can be tough to sense the presence of the higher-functioning beings that are always around us and want to help.
So humans and those other beings need to sort of “meet in the middle.” They slow their fast-moving energy down, while we raise ours. It’s a little bit like those planes that get fueled in mid-air.
“Raising energy” is different for everyone. Personally, I get uncomfortable if I feel too “buzzy,” so I’ve learned how to monitor myself as I do any exercise, and then dial it up or down as needed.
Regular meditation is and has always been the standard way to actively raise and control our energetic vibration, but here are some other things that can be done, pretty much anywhere:
-Drink water. Water conducts electricity. Electricity is a form of energy. Staying well hydrated keeps your vibe going.
I also like to write an intention on my water bottle, like “Health,” “Joy” or whatever I need. Water, boosted with an intention, has enormous power: the molecules are changed –literally. There was an experiment done in which water droplets were either prayed over or yelled at. When viewed through a microscope, the prayed-for water exhibited a beautiful crystalline structure; the yelled-at ones looked dark, raw and dirty. Intention really packs a punch; make yours positive ones.
-Practice gratitude. Focus on what you have versus what you don’t, what’s going well versus what sucks. That upgrades your vibration in a huuuuge way, because “gratitude-energy” resonates at a very high level. I like writing down 5 things each day that I’m grateful for.
On today’s menu, it was:
1) waking up in a warm, comfy bed
2) the “regulars” at the diner who always make me smile
3) the leaves turning colors outside my window
4) a hot shower and a cup of coffee
5) my three healthy, snuggly cats
Ain’t my boys cute?
Right now, what 5 things are YOU grateful for?
-Listen to Buddhist or Gregorian chants. Not only do they sound gorgeous, there’s a very high spiritual energy attached to these particular forms of music. No surprise they’re key parts of two grand spiritual traditions.
-Jump up and down. I’m not kidding. Physical activity raises physical energy — and your vibration. Dancing, walking, whatever will do the trick. But it’s been shown that just jumping up and down “excites” the cells in the body and makes them healthier. Hey, Van Halen was on to something….
Besides it being a part of working with angels, spirit guides or those on the Other Side, a higher energetic vibration is key to the Law of Attraction: when we sense the very real Universal Flow, we can then direct that heightened awareness and clarity to manifest what we want in our life.
But here’s the thing about raising your vibration: things in your life may start to go amazingly well. In fact, maybe too well. You may start to worry that something “bad” is bound to happen, that no one deserves all these blessings. Just remember that this state of increased happiness and awareness is what we’re supposed to be experiencing. That joy then ripples out to the rest of the world, so you getting a big break puts a smile on your face, which then makes you more likely to show kindness to someone else, and so on…Good stuff for you is good for everyone. Get it?
Life holds a balance, so yes, there will be tough times – they hold lessons for us, it’s just the natural order. But the truth is that we can experience a greater percentage of “good stuff” over “bad” when our vibration is better aligned with Universal Source. And we can handle challenges much more efficiently, because we can call on help from the Other Side – and actually sense it/work with it for a change.
So in any metaphysical or spiritual pursuit – or just plain old daily life –consider a heightened frequency as the gas that makes the car go. Get ready to go a whole lot faster!
Money issues are always a biggie when someone comes to me for a reading. Unless you’re a Trump or Kardashian, cash flow is on most of our minds these days.
Now, let’s be real: I believe one has to be practical in money matters (balance the checkbook, be responsible, blah blah blah). But I also believe that our attitude plays a huuuuuge part in our prosperity picture.
If you worry constantly about not having enough, feel limited in how much you can earn, anything that signals “lack” –well, that creates an energetic block. It’s that self-fulfilling prophecy thing.
Money is one of those things that affects us on a very deep level. Changing your beliefs about money can be tricky – but this is where the angels can help.
Angels are super-tough but super-loving beings, with only one thing on their daily “to do” list: to help humans achieve their best life. They are very keyed in to the fact that the Universe ALWAYS provides – its just that we get in our own way. ‘Cause we have a hard time seeing past our own noses.
So here’s an exercise that can help you get in touch with the innate flow of abundance and prosperity that’s always available to you.
THE ABUNDANCE TREE
Start by turning off your phone, taking a bunch of deep breaths and totally relaxing. Take as much time as you need to really get comfortable and quiet.
Now picture yourself standing outside, with a beautiful gate in front of you. On the other side of this gate is a gorgeous private garden housing your very own Abundance Tree. Open the gate and step inside. Take a look around and notice the sights and smells. Really make this a real place.
In the distance, you can see a gorgeous, richly leafed tree. Walk towards it.
As you get closer, you see that the tree is made up of currency. Now you’re right under it, and as you look up into the branches, you see bills of all denominations – even checks made out in your name. The tree is loaded – literally.
As you gaze at this amazing sight, your Guardian Angel arrives and stands next to you. In their hands, they are holding a receptacle. Look at it: is it a small cup, a bushel basket or something even larger? If it feels too “small,” ask your angel for a bigger one – because you deserve it!
Now take that container and stand beneath your tree. All you need to do now is to gently shake it and let the money rain down on you. Feel all that money falling around you. Feel it as it brushes past your face and hands. Its an endless shower of money! It piles up around your feet.
Now gather it up in your special container– don’t be shy. Gather it alllll up, knowing that there is – and always will be – plenty. For you. For everyone in your life. Because this is your very own Abundance Tree.
Now that you have all the money you need – and know that there is always more where that came from – how do you feel? Take that feeling into your day, tapping into the endless flow of abundance that is always available to you.
Because the Universe does not want you to suffer for lack of resources.
Thank your angel for bringing you to your Abundance Tree – and know that you can visit it anytime you wish. Ask your angel to help you remember the wonderful feeling of having all the money you want or need.
Breathe in, gently coming back to the present moment. Open your eyes – but remember the feeling of having stood in the shower of your Abundance Tree!
So I know that I’m loving this exercise. Let me know YOUR results with it!
Last night, I was still in a food coma from Thanksgiving and all its leftovers, so I found myself on the couch watching a marathon of one of those ghost/haunting shows. Things flying through the air, funky smells, noises, apparitions, lots of screaming people. Made me happy for my quiet little un-haunted house.
But it got me to thinking about ghosts. As a psychic-medium, I deal with spirits. But I have yet to encounter one of those spooky, home-wrecking ghosts (and if I did, I’d probably need a change of underwear. I’m not ashamed to admit it.) Anyway, I have some thoughts on the subject.
First off, ghosts are spirits who have yet to go to the Light. They hang around for lots of reasons. I think the biggest one is a fear of going to the Light; they’re afraid of having to face up to any bad behavior, real or exaggerated. So they hang out between the worlds. I mean, we’re given free will in this life, and to some extent, that includes our choices after we die.
Many ghosts will just sort of “pace” between the worlds. They stay in an area that seems comforting and familiar, even as it changes around them. In their eyes, their home is the same as it was back in the day, even if now, there’s a freeway runnin’ through the yard (apologies to Tom Petty).
Some ghosts may get noisy, and I think its their way of letting people know they’re still around. I mean, considering we live in an age where we update our social media every 5 minutes, can’t blame a lost soul for ratttling some plates to make their presence known.
Sometimes a ghost is actually just an energetic imprint. Something intense happened and punched its mark into the atmosphere – like the appearance of Civil War soldiers on the battlefield. I hate to think those poor guys are still having to relive their trauma; I think that what gets “seen” on those ghost walks is almost like a movie playing out long after the actors have left the set.
For spirits who are indeed stuck here – for whatever reason – there’s something called “Soul Rescue.” This is a specialized form of mediumship, where the medium works with certain spirit guides to help convince the hangers-on to move on to the Light.
But I mean, when you think of how many people die in a year – and how comparitively few ghosts there are in the world, hauntings are pretty rare.
The thing they all have in common though, is to scare the bejeepers out of most anyone who encounters them.
Fear is a very powerful energy; for some disembodied spirits, it can literally feed them. If you can dial back the fear, you can also dial down the influence – or frequency in appearance – of a ghost. Whether they’re benign like Casper or scary like Freddie makes no difference; that initial “Holy crap!” reaction is like a shot of 5-Hour Energy to spirits.
When it comes to dealing with ghosts, anything that makes you feel more powerful and less fearful – prayer, holy medallions, lucky talismans, tequila – will help. Archangel Michael is a great ally to call on when you’re feeling anxious (ghosts or not). The Catholic Chuch believes he did battle with Lucifer, so he can take on your jittery nerves or garden-variety spook without breaking a sweat.
One of my bedtime rituals is to ask Michael to stand guard around my home as I sleep. It makes for sweet dreams.
Just for fun, other cultures have some interesting other “ghostbusting” traditions:
-Put salt across the threshold of your door. This is good for keeping any janky energies in general from entering (like your pain-in-the-ass neighbor). My friend Joanne says that, in Greece, they put sugar under the doormat for similar reasons.
-In the Far East, priests purified and protected their temples with cinnamon sticks. Place a bundle by your door or over the windows.
-Wind chimes began as a way to scare off negative energies. And they sound awesome!
-Wear anything made of silver or obsidian as protection.
-Garlic over an entry way keeps anything troublesome away.
