Intuition is a completely natural function. And like other functions (except, perhaps, my inner thigh muscles), it can be strengthened.
The thing with your natural psychic gifts is that you have dozens of chances each day to give them a little work out. Hunches, first impressions and gut feelings are all signs that your intuition is pinging. Pay attention.
Also, pay attention to HOW you’re getting that information. Are you feeling sensations or emotions? Seeing images in your mind’s eye? Hearing words, music, etc. in your mind’s ear? A combination of the three? Psychic “style” is unique to each of us. Once you have an idea of how you “get” your information, it will become easier to tune it in on demand.
Outside of those everyday opportunities, here are some fun exercises to build that muscle.
PLAYING CARDS: Next time you’re hanging on the couch, grab a deck of playing cards. Give them a good shuffle. Pull a card with your non-dominant hand; don’t look at it. Concentrate and see if you can pick up the number, color or suit. Keep track of how many “hits” you get.
NEXT DAY’S NEWSPAPER: As you lay in bed, pretend that you’re lifting out of your body and astrally-travelling to your nearest newstand. See it clearly. Now look down at tomorrow’s newspaper. What do you see? Headline, word, photo? Take a moment to jot it down, then check the next day to see how you did.
WHAT AM I DOING? This is a fun one to do with a friend. Have your friend make a list of five simple actions: jumping up and down, standing on one foot, washing a dish, etc. They don’t share the list with you. At a set time, they perform one of the actions. You tune in at that time and see if you can pick it up. Do this every day for five days. You could also do this with your kids.
Tarot is a great way to ignite your own psychic skills; the images really “speak” to that part of your brain. Here’s a quick way to get started.
One thing to keep in mind with any form of psychic development is to keep things light and fun (and to stay healthy). When you’re trying too hard, it chokes off the flow. Imagine my surprise when, during a demonstration at a UK spiritualist church, they played ABBA songs beforehand. Personally, I would’ve chosen Parliament Funkadelic, but that’s just me. Anyway, the music raised the energy, made people smile and dance and really set a great mood.
So have fun as you open up your skills. And like vitamins or a quick set of pushups, do something psychic every day.
My given name is “Cynthia.” Which I’ve always hated. The family story goes that my sister picked it out of a baby name book ‘cause she thought it “sounded funny” (bitch). But my parents liked it and I was stuck with it. That’s what sucks about being a newborn – no say in anything.
Anyhoo, I’ve since done some research and found that the name means “Of the moon” which, given my metaphysical bent, seems appropriate. I’m fascinated by the ancient, timeless passage of this glowing orb through the night sky. It has its own rhythm and definitely its own power. Anyone who’s worked with the public can attest to the effects of the “full moon” – people get crazy, irritable, a little nuttier than usual, amiright? So Moon Energy is a real thing.
Wiccans and pagans drill way down into the subject of moon cycles. But for the rest of us, a simple working knowledge of the energy that’s right over our heads is enough. Check the weather report for the current moon phase. Let it help you with the daily workings of life. And you get a do over every 28 days!
THE NEW MOON
The dark of the moon is the perfect time for planting the seeds of something new. It’s that empty space where a project, plan, dream can begin to take root. The New Moon gives a little “oomph” to anything that’s just beginning. It’s a good time for planning a project, making a move or learning something new.
Here’s a little ritual to try. On the night of a new moon, write out your goal on a piece of paper. Light a candle and visualize it coming true. Look up at the moon and ask that it be granted, then burn the paper in the candle flame (be careful!). Repeat this over 12 nights (if you miss one, you have to start over).
THE WAXING MOON
As the moon “grows,” so does the energy of anything you want to “increase.” This is a great time to try to get pregnant, look for a new lover (or start counseling with your existing one) or ask for a raise.
To “grow” more money, cut out a picture of a frog, tell it what you need, then keep it in your wallet.
THE FULL MOON
The moon is at its most potent, so when you need extra power, this is the time. The full moon helps with legal issues, looking for work or healing. Because the light of the moon is so bright, this is also the time to focus on anything spiritually-related (like developing your intuition or praying for world peace).
To help someone (or even you) heal from an illness, take a white candle, a sprig of rosemary and a photo of the person. Light the candle and envision its healing light streaming into that person’s body.
THE WANING MOON
As the moon begins its journey back to the dark, use this dissipating energy to let go of something. I once timed a surgery to the waning moon to help the doctor rid my body of an unneeded tumor. This cycle will help you gracefully wrap up any relationship that’s run its course, or a part of your life that no longer works.
I like this little ritual for ending a bad habit: take a piece of black string and tie four knots. The first is the mental aspects of the habit, why you keep it. The second represents the actions around this habit. The third is the emotions around the habit, how you feel about it – and about giving it up. Finally, the fourth knot represents the practical aspects of the habit – like how much it cots for those cigarettes. During a waning moon, untie one knot each day, symbollically ‘releasing’ the habit. Then destroy the string when you’re done.

Now to sing us out, Karl Wallenberg and the Waterboys with one of my faves.
One of my clients asked me the other day about working with the Tarot. She had taken a class once, but admitted that she felt overwhelmed with the deck she had been given to use and wondered if she should try another.
The answer is “yes.” Tarot is a very deep subject, but letting the imagery help you along is key, no matter what stage of development you’re at. There are literally thousands of different decks out there. One (or more) will really talk to you.
A friend of mine is a Tarot junkie, collecting hundreds of them over the years. She has an artistic eye and says the different images really trigger her intuition. And that’s the point. For a beginner, letting the pictures “speak” to you can help you enjoy the cards right off the bat.
I began with the Rider-Waite deck, and its still my favorite. This is sort of the gold standard of Tarot decks. It was first published back in 1909 and remains one of the most popular decks ever. This is the deck I teach on, because once you learn it, it makes learning others easier.
Another deck I like is the Robin Wood Tarot. Her imagery is very bold and really jumps out at me.
I was given the Celtic Spiral deck as a gift. Ick. This one really skeeves me out. The people in it look drunk to me. See what I mean by how the images can “speak” to you? This deck tells me to run, run far away. But other people might like it. Tarot is such a personal thing.
Once you get comfortable with a certain deck, you might want to sample the others out there. Believe me, there are decks for every possible interest: fairies, Camelot, Kabbalah, Native Americans, even cats (yes, I have that one). It’s interesting to see what new spin different images can put on a card’s meaning.
The bottom line is to let the pictures trigger your emotions and intuitive feelings. You’ll be surprised at what you can pick up, even if you’re still just learning the “official” meanings. Play with the cards. Don’t take it too seriously or try too hard. Like a wonderful picture book, just turn the pages and see what stories come out!
The way I see it, you need these on speed-dial: a plumber, mechanic, lawyer, and in my house, a chicken place that delivers.
I would add to that, a good psychic.
I’m not talking about hitting up Madame Lasagna at the boardwalk. I’m talking about those of us who are truly, sharply tuned in to the intuitive side. That kind of information gives you a new (and sometimes better) way to deal with modern challenges.
Ever since the first human wondered if the person in the next cave over liked them or not, humans have sought ways to see what couldn’t be determined by other means. Psychic ability lets us pull back from what’s in front of us, and sense other things at play. The psychic’s brain downloads on a completely different channel and offers another source of information.
Intuition is a nice counterbalance to the super-tech, pointy-headed vibe of this 21st century life. It’s more organic. Your iPhone can do a lot of things, but picking up psychic info ain’t on the list.
Maybe that’s why I’ve seen such a huge increase in people coming for a reading whom you might not expect: a tough Irish cop, a psychoanalyst, a surgeon, for starters. They’re finding a new way around their problems, by tapping into this age-old data stream.
If you’re still kicking the idea around, here are my 3.5 reasons to consider a psychic.
Reason #1: WE SEE THE BIG PICTURE – THE REALLY BIIIIIG PICTURE
As a psychic, I’m focused on the particular issue you bring me, but I’m also “pulling back” to see what else is going on around its edges. It’s kind of like Google Earth. Many times, I pick up on things affecting it that you weren’t aware of: past-life influences, karma, what’s up with the other people involved. That kind of intel gives you a new perspective on why and where you’re stuck. (Even if you’re not sold on the idea of past lives or karma, admit it – it sounds interesting, doesn’t it?)
Reason #2 WE GIVE YOU A DETOUR AROUND THE ROADBLOCKS
When the same annoying situation/person keeps showing up in your life, there’s a reason. Yes, really. The Universe is trying to get your attention, or to provide a lesson. What is that lesson? An intuitive can give you the crib sheet and show you how to finally move forward.
Reason #3 A READING GETS YOU OUT OF YOURHEAD
Check the frownlines on your face: we spend so much time grinding our mental gears, trying to work out a solution to a problem.
Sometimes, you need to take the brain out of it – and see what instinct and the heart has to say. That’s the specialty of a psychic. Add that info to the intellectual mix, your own knowledge of the situation and you’ve got something you can really work with in solving a problem.
Reason #3.5 YOUR DEAD GRANNY WANTS TO SAY “’SUP?”
Not all psychics are mediums – meaning, possessing the ability to connect with those on the Other Side. But for those who do have that particular channel on their radio, it can be a powerful experience for the client. My motto is, “It’s not a reading ‘til someone’s crying.”
Connecting with someone you’ve lost is incredibly therapeutic. I’ve had clients finally be able to drop all kinds of baggage after getting a message from someone who’s crossed over. It’s not only intensely liberating, it’s a big comfort, as well. The right psychic-medium can hook you up on that channel.
When it comes to finding an intuitive, I strongly believe in personal recommendations. You want a good fit – and a truly professional intuitive won’t mind if he/she isn’t the right one for you.
Let me just add that a responsible psychic will only ask for his/her standard fee (and not hit you up for “extras,” like “removing curses”); and if someone’s issues are above their paygrade, they’ll suggest a qualified mental health professional.
At any rate, if you’ve ever rolled your eyes at the thought of consulting a psychic, open your mind. This ancient art is more 21st century than you think.
I’m a big believer that everyone – EVERYONE — is psychic. Whether it’s a hunch, first impression or gut feeling, intuition is hardwired into our system. It was a survival skill back in the day – and can still save you from a whole lot of aggravation, if you only trust it more. Admit it: there’s been at least one instance in your life where you “knew” something, right? Did you blow it off at the time? Many of us do, but I’m here to tell you that learning how to pay attention to those little “pings” is going to change everything.
So what distinguishes a professional psychic like me from plain old you? Not much, actually. I compare it to a radio: some people are born with their intuition “channel” locked in and turned waaaaay up. Others have to fiddle with the knobs a little to pick up what’s out there in the ether. But it’s totally do-able. Like anything, it just takes practice.
There are three basic ways psychic information shows up:
Clairvoyance: “clear seeing.” This is when you see images in your mind’s eye. There are some psychics who see things for real – but most of us see it in our head. I may see images of people involved in a person’s job, or a geographical place if I sense a move.
Clairaudience: “clear hearing.” This is “hearing” sounds, voices, words in your mind’s ear.
Clairsentience: “clear feeling.” You feel physical sensations, smell things – anything that engages your senses. For instance, I may feel a heaviness in my chest when I’m picking up someone who passed from lung or heart issues.
Very often, a psychic will get a mashup of the three. One channel may dominate, and it may vary from day to day. For me, I tend to predominantly hear and feel my info, with seeing images close behind. Like your fingerprint, your intuitive style is completely unique. And its fun to figure it out!
The experience of “getting” information often trips people up because they think they’re just “imagining” it. Here’s the thing – your imagination is the vehicle. It has to be – that’s how we process things in our lives.
Think about what you have to do after work. You’re probably seeing yourself running to the grocery store, picking up the kids after soccer and making dinner. That information shows up in your imagination, like images on a screen. And it’s the same way with psychic stuff.
The trick is to learn how to distinguish between the kind of imagination that has you seeing yourself in a hot air balloon with George Clooney (OK, that’s just me) – and the kind where you’re seeing a new job opportunity. That just comes with practice.
Before I share some fun exercises, let’s talk keeping yourself sane and healthy. Any kind of psychic work involves energy. It’s important to take some care before you dive in. Why? Well, think about one of those people – and you KNOW you know one – who just drains you. They have a talent for sucking you dry with their problems. After a night out, listening to their story (again), they say something like, “Wow – it was so great to see you. I feel soooo much better!” You, on the other hand, feel like you got hit in the face with a bat.
So energy is a real thing, and you need to know how to work with it. Before I do anything related to spiritual work, I envision an “egg” of protective white light around my whole body. This is something I learned years ago; it takes about 2 seconds and serves as a shield from whatever, good and bad. It keeps me from becoming completely knackered after a reading (PS — it’s a good thing to do when you’re about to meet that Energy Vampire for drinks. You’ll thank me in the morning).
If your ability to “see” this white light isn’t so hot, you can just say something like, “I surround myself with the white light of love and protection.” That’ll work, too.
So make it a point to do this super-quick ritual before practicing anything to do with your psychic side. It’s not a bad addition to your daily life in general — keeping a lot of random crap from sticking to you.
Now, let’s dive in.
NAME THAT HEADLINE
I first started teaching this little exercise back when old school newspapers were still big. Even if you get your daily news fix from an online site, it’ll still work.
Here’s what you do: start by putting yourself in that handy egg of white light. Then…
1) Set a notebook and pen aside to record what you get. Close your eyes, relax and take a few deep breaths.
2) Envision a blank movie screen or piece of paper in front of you. Keep breathing.
3) Now ask the Universe to send you a hint of tomorrow’s news. It may come as an image, a word, a feeling. Stay relaxed and let it unfold. Go with the first thing you get. I can’t stress this enough; oftentimes, our first impression is the RIGHT one. But we talk ourselves out of it.
4) As this is happening, stay gently engaged and observe how you’re getting the info: are you seeing it, feeling it, hearing it?
5) After a few minutes (really, keep this short so you don’t get too anxious), take a few more breaths and return to the “here and now.” Jot down what you got. Check it tomorrow and see how you did.
You may need to do this a few times before you get a “hit.” But it’s fun!
For this, you’ll need something like a piece of jewelry, from someone you don’t know the backstory on all that well. Maybe ask a friend to bring you their mother-in-law’s earring (yes, you’ll give it back. Unless its really nice….). You can try it on anything where you can get some confirmation afterwards.
Once more, put yourself in that white-light-egg thingy. Then…
1) Set a notebook and pen aside to record what you get. Close your eyes, relax and take a few deep breaths.
2) Hold the object in your non-dominant hand (meaning, the one you don’t write with). That allows you to tap more easily into the subconscious. Relax and keep breathing.
3) What information is coming off the object? It may come as an image, a word, a feeling. Stay relaxed and let it unfold. Go with the first thing you get. And, this is important, tell your friend what you’re getting (so they can verify). Don’t try to understand it. Just say what you’re getting. This may take some time, since we tend to want to be “right.” Learning to just flow with the information is one of the hardest parts of psychic development.
4) Again, stay gently engaged and observe how you’re getting the info: are you seeing it, feeling it, hearing it? Does one dominate more than the others?
5) After a few minutes, take a few more breaths and return to the “here and now.”
As your friend tells you what was a “hit,” recall how you got that piece of info. Seeing, hearing, feeling….The more you do this, the more clearly defined will be that line between your everyday imagination and the particular way your psychic info comes in.
These are two simple exercises that train your psychic muscle, but you can work it all day long: as in, “who’s calling?” (don’t cheat and look at your phone). Is a particular person going to reach out to you today? What song will come up next on the radio? You could sit with a deck of cards while you watch Real Housewives and try to guess their color, suit or number as you pull each from the deck. The idea is to let the part of you that doesn’t work off intellect to be in the driver’s seat more often.
And the one thing I can’t emphasize enough? Follow your gut. When something comes up in your life that you’re not sure of, what does your gut tell you?
Paying attention — and acting on the feelings your gut inspires — is the easiest way to tune up your psychic muscle. I’ve heard that “intuition is wisdom in reverse.” So start working that channel and save yourself a lot of grief. You’ll thank me (and I love gift cards to Target!).
So what times did your intuition tell you something? Spill it in the comments section!
