I was recently a guest on a podcast explaining the ins and outs of how a psychic reading works.
For every person I’ve read, I know there are more out there who have thought about getting a reading but hesitate for various reasons. So, I’m here to demystify the process.
It isn’t evil
Trust me, I’ve heard it all (some from my own family). However, a reading is not a sin or “the devil’s work.” This belief came from long ago, when religion was the last word on everything. A reading is meant to give you a sense of the bigger picture, outside of the institutions. Tarot cards, for example, trace the human journey as we work to become wiser, better, more enlightened. You form a more direct connection to the Universe and your own role in it. Religious leaders don’t like losing their influence. Simple as that.
Relax
When I get a new client, there’s frequently some nerves. They don’t know what to expect, what they may hear, or what’s expected from them. Just relax and take a deep breath! Readers are here to help you; that’s why we do it. It’s very fulfilling.
Personally, I don’t look at what’s going on in your situation as “bad” or a foregone conclusion. A reading is meant to give you your power back. My job is to reframe the issue, see if there’s a better way through or around it, and spot something you’re missing.
On that note, an ethical reader will NEVER try to scare you or tell you there’s evil vibes causing your problems. These scammers will try to convince you to hand over more money to alleviate a “curse” or some other bullshit. I’ve had some very smart, accomplished people tell me how it happened to them.
I’m repeating this to remind you that if a reader is making you nervous or uncomfortable, heed your gut and walk away.
And speaking of money…
A good reader will let you know – up front – how much a session is.
Which brings me to psychic phone lines. I have some fellow psychic friends who worked them; for a hot second, I did too. However, the point of these lines is to keep you on as long as possible to keep racking up the dollars. My friends and I weren’t comfortable stringing callers along, and we found our “visibility” on the website greatly reduced, so we bailed. Better to invest in a reading where you know exactly how much you’ll pay right up front. Plus, you won’t be watching the clock.
Think of it as a conversation
A lot of newbie clients expect me to just start telling them stuff without them saying a word. That’s not really how it works. I like to make the most of their time by first asking the general areas they want information on. This focuses my energy, and we get right into it.
It’s totally fine to have a “conversation.” I don’t want every detail, but having a general framework for the cards I’m throwing is simply more efficient. This is not “cheating” – the readers I know take what we do very seriously, and we want to give you something useful.
It’s exciting when I get “hits” on things during the reading, but if you want a dazzling mentalist show, go to Vegas.
A reading isn’t magic
Some clients have an expectation that getting the reading alone will change things. Sorry, you have a part to play after you leave.
What a reading gives you is information and insights from a different source. What you do (or don’t do) with it is up to you. You have free will and nothing is ever carved in stone. That’s probably the most important thing a reading can impart: a reminder of your own power in any situation, no matter how tough it may be.
No reading is ever 100 percent
Because it comes through a human filter, intuitive information can never, ever be 100 percent correct every time. I hear from clients that “X” came true, but nothing is happening on “Y” (although I hear back when it shows up later). That’s just the way it works.
Several things influence the information: other people, time, etc. I always suggest recording your reading on your phone, because what was discussed may unfold in a slightly different way. Other details may make sense later, too.
The advice I give clients is, “Take what resonates and leave the rest.”
You don’t have to be physically there
A reading done remotely is just as effective as one done in person. Your energy and that of the reader are mingling on a higher level. It’s fun to experience the incense, touch the cards, and all that, but it’s not necessary.
For my own part, I’ve read people all over the world (I even read a client in Sweden via email because her English wasn’t so great. She sent questions, and I wrote back).
So, don’t let distance hold you back. Zoom or phone is absolutely fine and so convenient in a busy life.
