A Manifesting Guide for the Non-Believer

The Law of Attraction “thing” has been around for a good long while. There have been a ton of books and videos done on the subject, and up to now, I’ve been a little bit lukewarm on the subject.

Look, I’m a practical gal, and I feel like the “magical thinking” thing that permeates a lot of the New Age community is just that:  “thinking.”   To me,  you’ve also got to do some actual heavy lifting to make stuff happen on this plane.

But hold up – I just stumbled on a book that aligns perfectly with the Law of Attraction and factors in my own ideas of doing what you need to do.

For years, Jerry and Esther Hicks have been the defacto stars of this LOA stuff, and I have flipped through a few of their books without much impression. But the one I just found is different for me. I find it kind of fascinating that I actually pulled it off the shelf and paid good American dollars for it – because this is generally not me at all.

Anyway, the book is called Manifest Your Desires, and it breaks down aspects of the LOA into 365 bite-sized nuggets. Maybe that’s what my pea-brain needs, but its allowed me to really, REALLY absorb this important lesson.

One of the things that jumped out at me is the vital importance of how you FEEL about something. Face it, how much fear, negativity, general whingeing is running through your head right now? I know that I’ve caught myself in that place more than once in recent weeks. This book has given me a way to step out of that dark rabbit hole.  Without feeling all Pollyanna-ish.

Look, our emotional state is also an energetic one; sending negative, worrisome or otherwise bad thoughts into the ether doesn’t help one bit. Not to say that you won’t have those feelings on more than one occasion, but actively choosing a more empowered state when you can is the thing. It seems so simple, but let’s face it — everyday life sets up serious barriers, and we spend more time focusing on what we don’t want than what we do.

For my own self, this book helped give me some practical ways to switch away from that heavy state into a better frame of mind – and I can actually “see” in a very real way, where it is I want to go. It’s like coming out of a heavy fog.

So thanks, Esther and Jerry. The act of “manifesting” now doesn’t seem so remote or complicated to this hard case.  I can’t wait to see the results – ’cause I have quite the list, and I can’t wait to get started on it.

Magical Spring Cleaning Tips

Even though there’s still some snow on the ground where I live, it’s technically “spring.” And that puts most of us in mind of “spring cleaning.”

After a long winter inside, it’s time to throw open the windows, dive into untidy drawers and closets and give our homes a “reset.” You can increase the positive power of your efforts with these tips.

  • As you clean, keep an “intention” in mind. Let’s say your family went through a tough financial spot during the winter months. While cleaning, think about clearing out that heavy energy and drawing in more prosperity. Make up a little chant or affirmation if you’d like (something positive, like, “Better days are here”) – but even if you don’t come up with an affirmation, keep your new vision running through your head.
  • De-cluttering a closet may not be your favorite thing – but trust me, it has a super-powerful effect. Getting rid of stuff you no longer use (and donating it to someone who could use it) spreads positive energy. Making sure your remaining items are neatly hung/folded/stacked makes you feel more peaceful. (By the way, if you own a cat and find him/her curled up in a closet, they’re doing you a “feng shui” favor by breaking up stale energy)
  • There’s a current trend, based on Japanese thinking, in which you look at each and every item you own. If you don’t absolutely love it, you’re supposed to get rid of it. For me, I don’t have the time to do that – but there is something in the idea that too much “stuff” just clogs up the free flow of energy in your home. Maybe I’ll try it with a few things and get back to you.
  • Although I own several vacuum cleaners  – with my favorite being the Dyson  (massive pet hair, don’tcha know) – one powerful magical tip for spring cleaning is to take a new broom and go through each room, sweeping in a counterclockwise direction. This symbolically “undoes” any old, stale energy. Again, your intention is the most important thing.

  • Speaking of brooms, take the time to sweep the entrance points of your home. (I keep a separate “outdoor” broom for this purpose – meaning, the “new” broom from last year’s spring cleaning) As you do it, envision that you’re sweeping away old energies and clearing a space for great new things to come into your life.
  • Some magical practitioners are big on using only natural items for spring cleaning: vinegar, essential oils, what have you. Me? I still go hardcore with the Clorox and scum-busters. I do believe that “intention” is the most important cleaning ingredient. But there is ONE natural item I feel is invaluable in your spring cleaning, and that is, a sage bundle.

  • The Native Americans have used sage for eons to cleanse and purify a space. Once you’ve done your bit with a mop, seal the deal by lighting a sage bundle and moving through each   room. ( I keep an ashtray underneath to catch any burning bits that might fall off as I work)   Let the smoke remove any leftover negative energy. As with your broom, move in a               counterclockwise direction. Open the windows to let both the smoke and the old energy out. I think you’ll find that your home feels considerably lighter and cleaner after this one ritual.

Here’s a bonus tip. After you complete your spring cleaning, stash a $20 bill (or higher denomination, if you can afford it) under the mat of your home’s main entrance (meaning, the one your family uses the most). Every time someone steps on that mat, it charges the bill and helps draw more prosperity into your life.

How to Raise Your Vibration – and Why You Should

The Beach Boys sang about it – and so did a pre-“serious actor” Marky Mark. I’m talking about “good vibrations.” “Vibrations”, as in a higher energy. “Good”, as in, well, good.

Working effectively with any metaphysical practice (like Tarot), or entities (like angels), requires adjusting our energy. That’s because our usual human energetic state just chugs along. We go on autopilot, with our vibration sort of “powered down.”

Not to mention, today’s environment pounds the crap out of our energy, between the food, toxins and endless electronic distraction we’re subject to. In that state, it can be tough to sense the presence of the higher-functioning beings that are always around us and want to help.

So humans and those other beings need to sort of “meet in the middle.” They slow their fast-moving energy down, while we raise ours. It’s a little bit like those planes that get fueled in mid-air.

“Raising energy” is different for everyone. Personally, I get uncomfortable if I feel too “buzzy,” so I’ve learned how to monitor myself as I do any exercise, and then dial it up or down as needed.

Regular meditation is and has always been the standard way to actively raise and control our energetic vibration, but here are some other things that can be done, pretty much anywhere:

-Drink water. Water conducts electricity. Electricity is a form of energy. Staying well hydrated keeps your vibe going.

I also like to write an intention on my water bottle, like “Health,” “Joy” or whatever I need. Water, boosted with an intention, has enormous power: the molecules are changed –literally.  There was an experiment done in which water droplets were either prayed over or yelled at. When viewed through a microscope, the prayed-for water exhibited a beautiful crystalline structure; the yelled-at ones looked dark, raw and dirty. Intention really packs a punch; make yours positive ones.

-Practice gratitude. Focus on what you have versus what you don’t, what’s going well versus what sucks.  That upgrades your vibration in a huuuuge way, because “gratitude-energy” resonates at a very high level. I like writing down 5 things each day that I’m grateful for.

On today’s menu, it was:

1) waking up in a warm, comfy bed

2) the “regulars” at the diner who always make me smile

3) the leaves turning colors outside my window

4) a hot shower and a cup of coffee

5) my three healthy, snuggly cats

Ain't my boys cute?

Ain’t my boys cute?

Right now, what 5 things are YOU grateful for?

-Listen to Buddhist or Gregorian chants. Not only do they sound gorgeous, there’s a very high spiritual energy attached to these particular forms of music. No surprise they’re key parts of two grand spiritual traditions.

-Jump up and down. I’m not kidding. Physical activity raises physical energy — and your vibration. Dancing, walking, whatever will do the trick. But it’s been shown that just jumping up and down “excites” the cells in the body and makes them healthier. Hey, Van Halen was on to something….

Besides it being a part of working with angels, spirit guides or those on the Other Side, a higher energetic vibration is key to the Law of Attraction: when we sense the very real Universal Flow, we can then direct that heightened awareness and clarity to manifest what we want in our life.

But here’s the thing about raising your vibration: things in your life may start to go amazingly well. In fact, maybe too well. You may start to worry that something “bad” is bound to happen, that no one deserves all these blessings. Just remember that this state of increased happiness and awareness is what we’re supposed to be experiencing. That joy then ripples out to the rest of the world, so you getting a big break puts a smile on your face, which then makes you more likely to show kindness to someone else, and so on…Good stuff for you is good for everyone. Get it?

Life holds a balance, so yes, there will be tough times – they hold lessons for us, it’s just the natural order. But the truth is that we can experience a greater percentage of “good stuff” over “bad” when our vibration is better aligned with Universal Source. And we can handle challenges much more efficiently, because we can call on help from the Other Side – and actually sense it/work with it for a change.

So in any metaphysical or spiritual pursuit – or just plain old daily life –consider a heightened frequency as the gas that makes the car go. Get ready to go a whole lot faster!

The Abundance Tree

Money issues are always a biggie when someone comes to me for a reading. Unless you’re a Trump or Kardashian, cash flow is on most of our minds these days.

Now, let’s be real: I believe one has to be practical in money matters (balance the checkbook, be responsible, blah blah blah). But I also believe that our attitude plays a huuuuuge part in our prosperity picture.

If you worry constantly about not having enough, feel limited in how much you can earn, anything that signals “lack” –well, that creates an energetic block. It’s that self-fulfilling prophecy thing.

Money is one of those things that affects us on a very deep level. Changing your beliefs about money can be tricky – but this is where the angels can help.

Angels are super-tough but super-loving beings, with only one thing on their daily “to do” list: to help humans achieve their best life. They are very keyed in to the fact that the Universe ALWAYS provides – its just that we get in our own way. ‘Cause we have a hard time seeing past our own noses.

So here’s an exercise that can help you get in touch with the innate flow of abundance and prosperity that’s always available to you.

THE ABUNDANCE TREE

Start by turning off your phone, taking a bunch of deep breaths and totally relaxing. Take as much time as you need to really get comfortable and quiet.

Now picture yourself standing outside, with a beautiful gate in front of you. On the other side of this gate is a gorgeous private garden housing your very own Abundance Tree. Open the gate and step inside. Take a look around and notice the sights and smells. Really make this a real place.

In the distance, you can see a gorgeous, richly leafed tree. Walk towards it.

As you get closer, you see that the tree is made up of currency. Now you’re right under it, and as you look up into the branches, you see bills of all denominations – even checks made out in your name. The tree is loaded – literally.

images

As you gaze at this amazing sight, your Guardian Angel arrives and stands next to you. In their hands, they are holding a receptacle. Look at it: is it a small cup, a bushel basket or something even larger? If it feels too “small,” ask your angel for a bigger one – because you deserve it!

Now take that container and stand beneath your tree. All you need to do now is to gently shake it and let the money rain down on you.   Feel all that money falling around you. Feel it as it brushes past your face and hands. Its an endless shower of money! It piles up around your feet.

Now gather it up in your special container– don’t be shy. Gather it alllll up, knowing that there is – and always will be – plenty. For you. For everyone in your life. Because this is your very own Abundance Tree.

Now that you have all the money you need – and know that there is always more where that came from – how do you feel? Take that feeling into your day, tapping into the endless flow of abundance that is always available to you.

Because the Universe does not want you to suffer for lack of resources.

Thank your angel for bringing you to your Abundance Tree – and know that you can visit it anytime you wish. Ask your angel to help you remember the wonderful feeling of having all the money you want or need.

Breathe in, gently coming back to the present moment. Open your eyes – but remember the feeling of having stood in the shower of your Abundance Tree!

So I know that I’m loving this exercise. Let me know YOUR results with it!

Deer, Deer: Symbolism of the Deer

I love deer.  My neighbors may complain that they eat everything in the yard, but I don’t care.  No matter how often I see them nibbling in the dusk light, I hold my breath with wonder.   The other night, I was blessed to have them respond to my invitation to eat the corn I placed gently on the ground.  It was magical.

th

I’m not alone in my love of deer: every culture has its tradition related to this   beautiful animal.  In China, deer are associated with abundance.  The Celts believed that fairies trailed behind them, as they cut a path through the forest.  Native Americans prayed to deer to ensure a good hunt.

Animals cross our path for a reason.  When you see a deer (even in a picture), it’s a reminder to tune into your gentler side.  Nudge rather than push.  It also encourages you to step away from the noise and busyness of civilization, and  go deeper into the “forest” of your own intuition.  Expand your awareness of what’s going on around you.  Do more listening than talking, and you’ll find a new path through whatever blocks you.

Honor your deer sighting with a solemn nod in their direction, and a “thank you.”  And maybe some corn!

Tips for the Law of Attraction

I admit  it:  I have a serious love/hate relationship with The Law of Attraction.   I get the physics behind it, that if we properly align our energies with the Universe, we can attract whatever we want into our life with a lot less sweat.  That makes sense to me.  That’s the “love” part.

Buuuuttt……then why hasn’t my Porsche shown up in the driveway?  Am I a complete loser with the Law?  Are my energies not operating at full capacity?  That’s the “hate” part.

Like most of us, I’m still working on going fully operational with manifesting, but here are two things that have helped me so far.

1)            START SMALL.  REALLY SMALL.  REALLY, REALLY SMALL.

The book, The Secret, suggests first trying to “manifest” a cup of coffee. See if someone offers you one, shows up with an extra mug, whatever.

You could also attract a great parking spot.  Or finding a quarter.  The point is, not to overwhelm yourself.  It’s like learning to walk:  you didn’t go from crawling to running the New York Marathon in one fell swoop.  Baby steps, people.

th

2)            LEAVE THE “HOW’S” TO THE UNIVERSE

This is by far the biggest obstacle to manifesting.  We disperse our energies in trying to direct how things are gonna show up, rather than keeping an eye on the prize itself.

Look at it this way:  say you’ve waited months  to get a table at a five-star restaurant.  You look at the menu and choose your meal, something sinfully delectable.  The waiter takes your order and heads off into the kitchen.  Would you get up from your chair, follow him, then proceed to tell the chef how to make your dinner?   Granted, I was once a waittress and had a couple of obnoxious customers who came close to that – but seriously.    Leave the chef alone to work his magic.

Throw in a foot massage and a mariachi band, and my night is complete.

Throw in a foot massage and a mariachi band, and my night is complete.

If you want to direct that control-freak energy somewhere, focus it on how you’ll feel when this goal arrives.  Picture yourself as already having it. Bask in it.  But dial back the need to shape the  “when” and “how.”  That just slows your power down.

By the way, finding your focus is something I wrote about here.

I read somewhere that just  sixteen seconds of really soaking in the feeling of what you want puts as much juice towards making something happen, as doing 100 hours of actual labor towards that same goal.  Mind. Blown.

So don’t beat yourself up if your manifesting powers aren’t working at full bore.  Start small, take baby steps, and leave the details to that awesome Chef in the Sky.  Because you might get a free dessert you weren’t expecting.

A Secret About “The Secret”

I’ve recently been revisiting that book, The Secret.  It’s not quite as trendy as it was about 5 years back, but its discussion of the Law of Attraction is as relevant as ever.

images-2

The book’s thesis – that thoughts are magnetic –feels right to me, and is being backed up by science.  Focusing your mental and emotional energy on a particular goal helps align it with the creation energy all around us.

Buutttt….how do you focus all that awesome energy when you don’t really know what you want?  Or your “wish list” changes from week to week?  Let me tell ya, as a kid, writing my list out for Santa was a bitch.

"Wait, I also want a Barbie...and, oh, wait, maybe not that, but...."

“Wait, I also want a Barbie…and, oh, wait, maybe not that, but….”

Needless to say, when your goals change as much as Madonna’s face, the Law of Attraction is just busy trying to keep track.

Yeah, I went there.

Yeah, I went there.

So here’s an awesome exercise I learned from Miss Oprah:

1)  Pick an area of your life you’d like to change:  your body, your lovelife, your work,  Whatever.

2) Take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle.  On the one side write “What I Never Want Again.”  On the other, “What I Do Want.”

3) Now think about your goal.  Let’s say it’s a better love life.  Think about your last (or current) partner.  What about that relationship really, really bugs/bugged you? Go for the first things that come to mind:  the fact that he/she drank more than Snooki?  The way they clammed up whenever you really needed to share your feelings?  The back that had more hair  on it than a Yeti?

"I never want a girlfriend who maintains a blood-alcohol level of 3.0."

“I never want a girlfriend who maintains a blood-alcohol level of 3.0.”

Don’t drill down into every pesky little annoyance; stick to broad strokes to begin with.  Write them down on the one side of your list.

4) OK, so the things that you NEVER want to experience again?  The exact opposite is what you DO want.  Example: “I never want someone who drinks ‘til they puke” leads to “I want a partner who’s sober or only drinks a little.” Example: “I never want someone who ignores me when I need a hug” becomes “I want someone who is affectionate and attentive.”

This is a really fascinating exercise.  I find that it really helps you zero in on the core essence of what you want.  Its kinda like a dose of Ritalin for a jumpy brain.

And it will help the Law of Attraction know where to find you.

Grow Some Magic: Planting A Spiritual Garden

Winter has had a white-knuckled grip on us this year, hasn’t it?  My sister in Minneapolis reports more snow….in mid-April.  But here in New Jersey, I can FINALLY see things starting to pop up  and I’m making my list of magical plants to add to my garden this year.

Lavender is one of my favorite perennials.  It smells wonderful and is good for helping you chill out.  But it’s also good for attracting love; rub some of it on your clothes to send out the vibe.

images-1

Rosemary has protective properties, so I keep a pot of it near my front door.  I also make a bundle of rosemary and hang it on the front door to attract prosperity.

Sunflowers.  I sooooo love these flowers.  They are pretty magnificent in all their Shaq-sized glory.  When I read and sunflowers appear in my mind’s eye, I take it as a sign of spirit. They are a seriously lucky flower; let them keep watch over your yard, then bring them inside to lighten the heart.

images

Marigolds are easy to grow, and they are a good flower for anyone who wants to further their career.  They bring prosperity and success, but they also help keep negative energy away.  Traditions says they’ll also repel pain in the ass neighbors or visitors (hear that, Guy-Who-Keeps-Placing-Chinese-Menus-In-My Door?)

Morning Glory draws happiness and tranquility and Hibiscus draws love.  And of course, I have Catnip for the boys to roll around in.

I have a couple of Holly around my front door, mainly because they’re so beautiful.  But they also serve as protection.  I’ve heard that putting a few holly leaves under your bed will ensure a good night’s sleep.

Dandelions usually fall victim to the weed spray, but I’m learning to make peace with them.   They’ve been used for centuries for purification and healing, and planting them in the northwest corner of your property will help bring about positive change.  I don’t plan to actually plant the little buggers, but will let them co-exist with the grass this year.

My father and grandfather had a green thumb when it came to roses.  Me?  Not so much.  But I keep trying.  Roses raise the love vibration (no wonder we give them for Valentine’s Day) but they are also welcoming to the nature spirits.  If you place some random rose petals around your home, it will take down any janky vibes.  Will it make your teenager less sulky?  Um, can anything do that?

Speaking of roses, I have a metal archway and plan to train them over it.  Legend goes that walking beneath a bramble-covered archway will cure just about any ailment.  Except maybe hangovers.

images-2

Making a garden inviting to the nature spirits will bring a wonderfully peaceful energy.  I keep one small corner of my yard a little “wild.”  No weeding or lawnmowing allowed.  This is where those little guys can hang out.  Every so often I leave a little fruit or some crumbled cookies out for them.  Whether its the fairies or raccoons snarfing them down, no matter — the point is to let those entities know they’re welcome.

"Just leave the Fed X package....I'm in the shower."

“Just leave the Fed X package….I’m in the shower.”

For this same reason, don’t get too cheesed off if the birds eat some of your fruit plants.  Sharing your harvest is good karma.

Some of the other elements of my magical garden this year will include a simple do-it-yourself fountain (sounds nice and the birds like the water), plenty of windchimes and birdfeeders.  But the most important of them all?  A hammock, where I can take it allllll in. Preferably with a glass of wine in hand.

The Power of Thanks/Giving

With Thanksgiving upon us, I’m seeing tons of ads for Black Friday.  “Sale! Sale! Sale!”  “Buy! Buy! Buy!”

This is the time of year when people line up at 5 in the morning, just to pick up some ginormous flatscreen TV.  This is the time of year that feeds a never-ending appetite for stuff.  There’s no diet that can kill that ravenous hunger. Unless….

Unless we start to appreciate what we already have.  I was cleaning out a room in my house the other day, and it gave me a chance to notice things like my wonderful collection of books, the wall hanging my sister made me out of one of our grandmother’s quilts, the beautiful Maxfield Parrish print that makes me smile, the comfy love seat that my cat sleeps on while I read.  It made me happy.

Sheryl Crow once sang, “It’s not having what you want, its wanting what you got.”  Appreciating what we have  brings a certain sense of peace.  And ironically, it changes the energy, allowing “more” to flow into our life.  I think it’s because, when we constantly want for more stuff, love, money, whatever, the underlying message is “lack.”  We magnify that thought when we remain unsatisfied — but when we FEEL rich, that feeling also gets amped up.

It also helps to look at the blessing that a bad experience or challenge offers: adversity can offer us a gift if we look for it.  When I was 19, I ran across a saying in my Philosophy class (don’t ALL 19 year olds take Philosophy?) that stayed with me: “What doesn’t kill me, makes me stronger.”  Nietzche may have had plenty of issues, but he got it right with that observation.  Turn your dark moments inside out and find the hidden gem within.

Anyway, stop right now and count your blessings.  Literally.  Make every day one where you “give thanks” for everything that’s going right in your life.  Notice what happens after just a week or so. That flatscreen may not be so appealing after all.
