How A Dream Journal Connects You to the Other Side

One of the most valuable sources of spiritual information available to us comes through our dreams.  This is where our minds are stilled from the distractions of the day, where our subconscious relaxes and opens up. The dream state is the meeting place where our spirit guides, angels and loved ones on the Other Side can get in touch more easily.

th

And its where we can access information and messages from these entities. Keeping a Dream Journal allows you to compile this rich source of info; simply trying to “remember” a powerful image or dream experience pretty much guarantees it will vanish by the time you’ve finished your breakfast. Besides, some messages may resonate days or even weeks later. So writing them down is just smart.

Because this can be such a moving, enlightening part of your life, pick out an extra-nice blank journal and a pretty pen. Scrawling your insights in lipstick on the take-out receipt just doesn’t have the same vibe.

The info that downloads from the spiritual realm may come as a simple word, a feeling, an image – or a whole, long dream where you’re jamming with Aerosmith while wearing a hoop skirt straight out of Gone With the Wind.

That's me with the scarves.
That’s me with the scarves.

I’m pretty good at recalling my dreams, and when I write them down, I go back and highlight particular words or feelings that jump out from the whole scenario.

Dating your entries is also crucial: when you look back, you may spot an overall “thread” that has meaning. Or individual dates may align with important events in your life: the death-date of someone special, your birthday, anniversaries, etc.

When it comes to both getting messages from angels, loved ones or spirit in your dreams – and recalling them in general –your intention is everything. Before you go to sleep, ask for something to be sent your way – and the ability to remember it. When you first wake up from your dream, stay still for a moment or two to “capture” it. Then record it in your journal. This becomes a practice, so don’t be discouraged if it takes a little time. It wlll happen.

I also keep a couple of “dream encyclopedias” by my bedside to help decode various symbols: many times, spirit utilizes universal images like rainbows or birds to communicate with us. No need to reinvent the wheel.

You’ll recognize true messages for the impact they have on you: they stand out from ordinary dreams. Sleep is a great thing – but that time drooling on your pillow can be incredibly healing in more ways than one. Nighty night.

Getting Unstuck

One of the most common things my clients say when they sit down with me is, “I feel….stuck.”  It comes up over and over again. And again.

I know that feeling: you’re like one of those old vinyl records, and the needle keeps skipping. Yes, I’m dating myself, but whatever – where you’re at doesn’t fit in one or more ways. You’re bored with your job, but not sure what else is out there. Your relationship feels like it belongs to someone else.   You’ve got a nagging feeling, “Is this all there is?”   But at the same time, you can’t seem to make any significant moves.

Super-annoying. Especially if the album is by Captain and Tennille.
Super-annoying. Especially if the album is by Captain and Tennille.

This is where intuitive information can be especially useful:

1) Finding the much, MUCH bigger picture. When you’re deep in the weeds on something like a complicated relationship, its hard to see past your own nose. When I tune in, my intuitive radar pulls back to see other influences at work. Most clients are surprised at what else is going on; that larger perspective is enormously enlightening.

When your issues can be seen...from space!
When your issues can be seen…from space!

2) Decoding the karma and past life influences affecting you. I know, I know: some of you are rolling your eyes. But I’ve had too much evidence of multiple lives; its the way we learn and evolve. And there are plenty of things we “carry over” that impact our present life. A reading can shed some light.

th-2

3) Hooking you up with your spirit team. Frequently, I pick up on spirit guides, loved ones on the Other Side – even angels – who are available to help you.   These powerful entities can see waaaay further down the road and provide not just a look ahead, but assistance to get you where you need to go.

th-3

There’s a reason humans have access to information from our sixth sense: it’s specifically there to help us live the life we came here to do. So if you’re feeling stuck, take a fresh look and see all the options you have to work with. They’re there. Promise.

The Blessings Challenge

I had a client here the other day who’s in a rough place. According to her, nothing is going right in her life. Zero, Zip. Bupkis. She was hunched over in the chair, hair in the face, and no matter what positive news I saw coming for her, it wasn’t enough. She was so caught up in her negative zone, that she couldn’t let anything hopeful in.  And I don’t think she wanted to.

She makes Grumpy Cat look like a kid on Red Bull and Pixie Stix.
She makes Grumpy Cat look like a kid on Red Bull and Pixie Stix.

Check it: when I’d last seen her a few months before, she was freaked out because she’d been unemployed for awhile. She never thought she’d work again.  I saw a job coming, and guess what,  she DID get it.  But now its not enough. She hates the job, it doesn’t pay enough, she doesn’t like the commute, yadda yadda yadda.

As a psychic, it wouldn’t much matter what I told her — she would never step up and accept anything good.   She’d just let the bad roll on over her.

Look, I understand that, when tough things are being fired at you like one of those tennis ball machines, its hard to stay positive.  These are precisely the times that call for summoning up your inner badass.

I wrote in my book, OK, So You’re Dead that souls on the Other Side vie for the chance to incarnate into human form.  I know, I know – who would choose to deal with all the stuff we have to deal with down here? But the truth is, being human offers the fast track to our spiritual development.   It’s serious boot camp.

So when you’re faced with a rough patch, you have a choice. Being a Debbie Downer may feel good because it completely absolves you of any responsibility, but it will change not one blessed thing.  It does not serve you.  In fact, that downer energy will just attract more icky stuff, like one nasty-ass magnet.

Now I’m not saying that you act like Mary Poppins On Nitrous Oxide, either.  I just want you to recognize that we are all given positive energy to work with in our lives. It’s a law of nature: yin and yang, dark and light, up and down. There’s never any bad that doesn’t balance out with something good; you may have to look for it, but its ALWAYS there.

So here’s the challenge: every night before you go to sleep, tick off seven things going right in your world (seven is a power number).

th-1

Your list could be as simple as the fact that you’re sleeping in a comfy bed, your kids are healthy, you have a roof over your head, you got a smile from the coffee guy, you’re not your mother-in-law, etc. I want you to do this every night for two weeks.

Whenever you encounter a tough moment during the day, recall one of your seven blessings from the night before. It counteracts the “heaviness” of that initial moment.

NOTE: The suckier your life seems at the moment, the more you need to do this!!!

I think what you’ll find is that the rough edges in your world start to smooth out. The more you look for what’s good and right, the more things will start to go right.

This is not Pollyanna talk; there are real physical properties to our attitude. It’s strictly an energy thing.  So when you’re challenged by the world, choose to stand up and claim the good stuff.  It’s like a shot of antibiotics to negative funk.

Need me to kick you in the butt and help move you forward?  Get in touch.

Pets In Spirit: How They Stick Around

In my free time, I volunteer with an animal rescue group. The other day, I adopted out one of our older cats to a woman who had recently lost her beloved Charlie. She was eager to give another senior cat a loving home – always a wonderful situation.

Anyway, when I called to follow up, she mentioned that the new kitty, Molly, was staring at the places where Charlie once hung out, as if she could see him. She, too, swore that she’d seen Charlie out of the corner of her eye several times since his passing. But of course, that was impossible. Right?

Wrong.

Animal energy is very “sticky.” It attaches to the people and places the critter loved.  So its no surprise that an animal who loved their human will want to keep an eye on them, even when they’re out of their physical body. [I wrote more about pet loss  here and here.]

Living animals pick up on spirit animals very easily. They communicate back and forth, with the spirit version often giving the physical animal an assist in the home: “The lady will give you people food if you look at her like this….” “Watch out for that small kid – he pulls tails….” “The man is sad….he needs extra hand licks.” [These are actual messages I’ve gotten during some of my Animal Communication sessions.]

As for thinking you’ve seen your pet after they’ve gone, you have. One client wrote to me that he’d seen his dog going around the corner of the living room. Another saw her cat laying in the sun like she used to – just for a second. You may also see “sparkles” out of the corner of your eye just after thinking of them. You think you hear or smell them, feel them laying next to you on the bed or sitting in the car like they used to. Don’t dismiss these moments. They are gifts from your fur baby on the Other Side.

The Psychic Power of Joy

One of my favorite movies was on TCM the other night: A Hard Day’s Night is celebrating its 50th anniversary.   Watching it again, I found myself smiling, laughing and dancing along to the Beatles music in my pajamas.

I started thinking about one of the reasons the Fab Four were such a break-out phenomenon: its widely thought that, after the horrifying death of JFK in 1963, America was in desperate need of joy. And they got it in the form of four cheeky, massively talented lads from Liverpool.

Joy is powerful stuff.  It changes molecules. It shifts the energy. I mean, even the grumpiest soul is lifted out of the doldrums by the belly laugh of a baby. And look at the phenomenal success of Pharell Williams’ song, Happy.  People crave joy to counteract the heavy times we live in.

If you're not smiling at this, you have no soul.
If you’re not smiling at this, you have no soul.

I did a reading the other day with a young girl who was super-serious.   I suppose she thought that was what was expected.   Needless to say, she was surprised when I cracked jokes during the session. Being a wiseass is my personal style, but it happens to serve a very real purpose.

Joy amplifies the channel to the Other Side. It has a high energy frequency which makes tuning in to finer energies a lot easier. Think of how you feel when you’re dealing with something serious or sad: its heavy, slow-moving, thick.  Blech.

On the flip side, when people are laughing or happy, things feel light and clear. That makes any intuitive work way easier. Not to mention life in general.

When I was studying in England, I attended a service by the National Spiritualist’s Union. This was where mediums would give messages from the Other Side to people in the audience. Before the service started, ABBA music was played in the church. Instead of stuffy old hyms, we were asked to sing along to Dancing Queen and Take A Chance On Me. The minister then entered, dressed in an outfit to rival the cover of Sgt. Pepper. We were all smiles, the energy felt great – and it made for a wonderful evening.

Don’t discount the power of joy in doing any psychic work.  There’s no rule saying it has to be serious and solemn.  In fact, that may be counterproductive, like swimming upstream.

Before I read, I crank up my iPod and spend a few minutes doing my own Soul Train line to  the music of Earth Wind and Fire.   It makes me happy.  And it makes me a better reader.

What brings you ear-to-ear joy?  Indulge in it right now.

Can Anyone Be A Medium?

So I was just at this weekend workshop for advanced mediumship training – always good to tune things up, learn some new skills, stretch a little. During a break, I was chatting with one of the other students about what we did, etc.  I made a comment that I believe everyone has psychic ability. She jumped in  “But not everyone’s a medium.”

On that, I have to disagree. Yes, there are some folks who are totally awesome at connecting with spirits on the Other Side. To them, the sensing of energy, images, feelings comes easily. They connect the dots, seemingly effortlessly.

Other mediums may need to work a little harder at making the link with a spirit person. But they make it.

I’ve been in enough classes over the years to know that everyone can discover and develop their own ability. I’ve seen someone go from straight beginner to being able to give a mediumistic message by the end of a course. It may not flow as smoothly as those with their channel more finely tuned, but its there. The rest comes from practice and building one’s confidence. That’s really it.

I believe that the ability to discern other energetic levels is inborn in each of us. It’s a tool we’ve been given to more fully realize our life’s goals. Over the centuries, humans have evolved to be more aware of this ability and less fearful of it, generally speaking. I’m thinking that a hundred years from now, connecting with spirit energy or psychic impressions will be just another thing we do when we need information. Like a spiritual Google.

Our inborn ability can be drowned out by the struggles of daily life. It’s a subtle organ, easily overwhelmed by grocery lists, car pools, deadlines, whatever. Opening and developing your own gift takes time, practice and commitment; simply put, those are the only things that separate you from a professional medium or psychic.

When people learn I’m a psychic-medium, they’re all like, “Ooooh….cool. I wish I could do what you do.” I’m here to tell you that you can. I would love it if we could get away from regarding mediums and psychics like they’re magical creatures from another planet; the same ability to pick up other energies is part of your DNA, too.

And personally, I think the world would be a much more peaceful place if we all tapped into it. So start tapping, bitches.

I shared some simple exercises to open your own psychic channel here.   And I write more about the Other Side in my new book – which is a great read, if I do say so myself!

What Happens to Suicide Victims?

One of the biggest reasons that I wrote my book, OK, So You’re Dead: A Sassy Guide to the Afterlife was to provide comfort.  Over the years, I’ve accumulated enough experiences and insights to provide some understanding of this major event in our lives.  Death is a total game changer, and the manner in which we exit this life shapes the way in which those left behind go on.   For example, with death after a long illness, there’s sadness, but a sense of relief.  When someone dies suddenly in a car accident, the process of grieving is entirely different.

I’ve had several clients who’ve lost someone through suicide.  Honestly, this is one of the toughest things ever.  For the person who fell so far into despair, this seemed their only way to find peace.  For the people left behind, they’re left to navigate al kinds of emotions, from anger to guilt and more.

There’s another aspect to grieving a suicide: wondering what their fate is on the Other Side.  Many religions feel that suicide victims will be eternally punished – personally, I think that’s a pretty cruel idea.  Didn’t they deal with enough already?

One school of metaphysical thought states that suicides boomerang right back into life without a break.   To my mind, either option adds to the burden of worry shouldered by friends and family.

My take is a little different.  I feel that, once they cross over, suicide victims are given some time to heal.  Not only are they recovering from whatever drove them to take their own life, they’re also working through their regret at doing it.  There are some survivors who recall having a big “Oh, shit, what am I doing?” flash as soon as they jumped or unsuccessfully attempted whatever.   They realize its not the answer they hoped for.  For those who succeed, they experience much the same thing.

I’ve had confirmation from spirit that suicides get a chance to heal and assess where it went off the rails.  They’re put into a state where they can look back at their life and see it from a less emotional place. Then they’re told that whatever they didn’t take care of in that life will be presented to them again in the next.  It may come in a different form, but the lessons must be faced.  That’s just the way it works for all of us.

Two key things that never fail to come through when I’m connecting with the spirit of a suicide are 1)they’re unbelievably sorry for putting that weight on their loved ones and 2) they’re OK now.  Seriously, I always, always hear this.  If you’ve been touched by this tragedy, please take those messages for yourself as well, and find your peace.

I wrote about a technique to help your healing along here.

My Field Guide to the Other Side

Kinda excited this morning.  I got up, fed the kitties, grabbed some coffee and logged on to see that my new book was uploaded to Amazon overnight!

OK So You'reDeadCover

This was one of those “aha” moments; over my time as a reader, I’ve gotten the same 25-30 questions hundreds of times.  Each.  So I decided to share my take on the whole afterlife thang in one place.

Among the questions I tackle:

-What happens at the exact moment of death?  What does it feel like?

-“Where” is the Other Side?

-Will I have to deal with people I couldn’t stand in life?

-What happens in a seance?

-Are spirits watching me….in a creepy way?

-How does a medium work? (Bonus info:  the one thing a medium might say that should make you run….)

-Are pets with us, or in a different locale?

-What happens to suicides?

That’s just a taste.  Frankly, as I started to write, the book took on a whole life of its own.  No pun intended.

At any rate, I think this is just the ticket for anyone who’s grieving…who has grieved…who will grieve.  Anyone who’s curious or maybe a wee bit freaked out over the thought of shuffling off this mortal coil one day.  I’ve found that, during an actual reading, the info has brought a lot of comfort to my clients.  I hope the vibe continues.

OK, So You’re Dead is available in paperback and Kindle formats.  Ain’t technology grand?

PS — I’d love to hear your comments on it; and if you’re so inclined, would appreciate a review at Amazon.  Thanks in advance.

How to Do An EVP Session

You’re not the only one who digs having a new phone or iPad.  Spirits looovvvve anything electronic.  I’m not sure why this is, except that gadgets of the electric kind make it easier for spirit to let us know they’re around.

Throughout the ages, spirit has used human “stuff” to give us a sense of their presence; there’s a house in Greenwich Village that Thomas Jefferson once lived in.  The residents say his ghost loves to flush the toilets.  But there’s something about electrical current that meshes even more nicely with the vibration of the spirit plane.

But did he put the seat back down? Typical guy.
But did he put the seat back down? Typical guy.

Professional ghosthunters have all kinds of high-tech doohickeys to measure the presence of spirit, but I had a chance to interact with the Other Side simply using my iPhone.

It’s called “EVP” – “electronic voice phenomenon.”  Ghosthunters have been known to leave recording devices running in an area that’s purported to be haunted.  Upon playback, they’ll hear voices, noises and other things that weren’t witnessed at the time.  The digital sensitivity of the machine picks up on other dimensions.

I was with a friend recently who suspected that her late father was hanging around her house.  We started our session by first invoking the white light of protection in the space.  This is critical whenever you work with the spirit dimension, because, let’s face it:  we don’t know everything and you never know who might decide to use the open channel.  So invoking the white light is just good practice, like putting on your seat belt.

We lit a candle (which helps spirit focus in on our presence) and invited her father to join us in our sacred space.  Then I turned on my phone’s Voice Memo function.

th

I asked several questions, leaving a space for him to “answer.”

After a few minutes, we closed the sacred space, blew out the candle – then played back the recording.

Amazingly, we heard “answers” to our questions.  They came in short one or two word bursts (yeah, don’t expect a full-on conversation or the Gettysburg Address; its not so easy for spirit to mesh their energy with ours to the degree  that we can talk like we do with our friends).   Plus, we heard a knocking sound that we hadn’t heard during the session.

I had a similar experience when I was studying at the Arthur Findlay College in the UK.  We set up a tape recorder in one of the rooms most used for spirit work, asked questions — then played back the answers, which featured two distinctly different male voices and one female voice.  Wowza.

Needless to say, EVP can be pretty cool.  And its nice to know that your phone can be used to “make a call” as it were to loved ones on the Other Side.

Let me know your own results with EVP by leaving it in the Comments.  And if you have questions, hit me up at the website.

Sylvia Browne, The Imperfect Psychic

I was saddened to see that Sylvia Browne passed away.  Although I got the feeling that she had been sick for awhile – she didn’t look good in some recent pictures.   So I’m glad she’s at peace and romping on the Other Side.  That must be some party.

Anyway, as I was scanning the news stories about her, I was pretty p’o’d to see a snarky link to a YouTube clip entitled, “Sylvia Browne, World’s Worst Psychic.”

Like many people, I first came upon Sylvia when she was on The Montel Williams Show.  She gave messages to audience members and answered questions.  On one of her televised appearances, she announced that Amanda Berry was dead.  Amanda was one of the women kidnapped and held hostage for years by that monster in Ohio.  Fortunately, she was found alive recently.  And Sylvia was pilloried for putting Berry’s mother through that agony.

She later posted a message stating how happy she was that Amanda was alive and regarding her TV appearance, that “Only God is 100% right.”

I’m sure that wasn’t the first time she was wrong about something, but this was certainly the most public example.  And it gave skeptics all the ammo they needed to discredit any of the good work she’d done through her career.

This is a point that needs to be discussed.  No psychic or medium, no matter how gifted they are, is always right.  But a lot of people expect us to be.  I had one potential client ask me if I was “100 percent accurate…or close.”  I laughed.  There’s something about psychics that inspires magical thinking – like we’re elves or hobbits.

It's a movie, people....
It’s a movie, people….

John Edwards was also touched with a little scandal when he had his regular TV show  Apparently, it was discovered that producers had the audience miked ahead of taping, eavesdropping on conversations and then ‘feeding’ some of that info to John.

I don’t think that John needed feeding, but clearly, the producers were trying to impress the audience by having him appear to be 100 percent right, all the time.  Which is bullshit.    And by trying to make the impossible seem real, it tainted John’s very real gifts.

For some, there seems to be an “all or nothing” mentality when it comes to psychics.  You’re either totally amazing or you suck.  But being sensitive to the spirit world is just that – being sensitive.  And real life has its impact.  We psychics know what affects us, positively and negatively, and live each day accordingly.  But sometimes you wake up from a bad night’s sleep and step in cat vomit. Stuff happens.

Good frikkin' morning....
Good frikkin’ morning….

Human foibles and challenges allow the psychic to better empathize with their client.  Our spirit guides “use” our experiences to translate higher knowledge into something useable and understandable.  It’s the equivalent of “Been there, done that, got the spiritual t-shirt.”   Expecting perfection from any intuitive is unrealistic.

As psychic-mediums, we do our best to be of service.  But in the end, its up to you to consider the information you’re getting, apply it or discard it.  I remind my clients to take what resonates with them, and leave the rest.

And that goes for Sylvia Browne.  In her life, she provided more good, healing, hopeful information than she did goofs.  And that’s what she should be remembered for.  RIP, girlfriend.
